Volunteers help create LEAF! Volunteers work scheduled job shifts in exchange for a weekend pass. Tent Camping is included, Meals are not included. LEAF is a lot of fun AND remember, you are committing to being at LEAF and working your assigned duties and hours. Please take pride in your part by reading all the information.

Volunteer

We accept over 500 volunteers each festival who help with everything from recycling to childcare. LEAF Volunteers work 10 hours in exchange for a weekend ticket that includes overnight tent camping. The 10 hours can be completed during the festival or Pre/Post Festival. We rely on our volunteers to help make LEAF the great festival that it is.

Star Volunteer

Star Volunteers are a step between an ten hour volunteer and staff. They work between 15 and 20 hours over the weekend. Star Volunteers may have more responsibility but they get more benefits such as meals and guest passes.

If you have been a regular volunteer in the past and want to become more involved this is a great opportunity.

Internships

LEAF is a great way to complete college internships. Whether it’s for a summer, semester or year LEAF offers students the opportunity to work directly with the staff who organizes the many outreach programs, fundraisers and festivals.

Internship focus areas include but are not limited to:

Information

==>YOUR APPLICATION: Application deadline for the May festival is April 1st and for the October festival is September 1st.. When applying online, you will pay the application fee by purchasing the application in our store. A message will then be emailed to you within 24-48 hours, containing a link to the application. Once submitted, you will receive confirmation that we have received your application. You will then have 10 business days to send us a photo copy of your I.D. and a deposit check. All volunteers MUST apply prior to LEAF, as we will not be able to take volunteers at the gate.

==>CONFIRMATION: Once we have received the photo copy of your I.D. and deposit check we will send you another confirmation that you have been scheduled. Please be patient, the month prior to the festival can be a very high volume time for us in volunteers. ALL VOLUNTEERS will be accepted if they are 21 years of age or older. Applications will only be denied if they had previously not met LEAF requirements for any reason. If you have not heard from us by May 1st or October 1st please EMAIL. Make sure your email accepts email from volunteers@theLEAF.org and info@thleaf.org & does not see it as spam. PLEASE Do NOT contact the office for your shifts. Changes are made often. YOU WILL receive your work shift upon arrival to LEAF. We do our best to meet your requests.

==>UNDER 21?: Volunteers between the ages of 18 and 21 are taken on a case by case basis (no guarantees) with a letter of recommendation from either a guardian, teacher, employer, or youth leader. We are no longer able to accept volunteers under the age of 18.

==>FEES & DEPOSITS: There is a $17 non-refundable application fee per festival or $29 for both ( if applying for both at the same time). A deposit fee is also required, which is your ticket price plus a no-show penalty. Deposit check is held until your volunteer shifts are completed. If you don’t complete ALL of your scheduled volunteer hours, your deposit check will be cashed. Deposit check cannot be a money order. If you don’t have a checking account, use a friend's & put your name on the check. Turn in your signed volunteer card once you have completed your shifts. If you do not drop off your card, at the Volunteer tent, before you leave the festival, you must send us your signed work card in the mail within one week. All DEPOSIT CHECKS will be torn up after we receive your signed card.

==>VOL CHECK-IN TIMES: Thurs: 4-10pm, Fri: 9am-10pm. Vol’s check-in at Main Gate! (Gate #2) Attention: ALL FESTIVAL VOLUNTEERS must arrive before Saturday noon!

==>WORKING at LEAF: You are given a choice of job areas. Job assignments are filled on a 1st come basis. Volunteers chosen to do pre-festival jobs (Monday - Thursday) will be contacted by phone. Please, No children while working any of pre-festival or festival shifts. WE DO NOT GUARANTEE specific jobs. We try our best to get you in the area and at the times you prefer, but be prepared for anything!! We cannot change your shifts during the weekend~please don't ask us. This causes the entire schedule to be changed & creates craziness. NO DOGS allowed before, during or after LEAF. NO EXCEPTIONS.

==>SHIFTS: You can work one 10-hr shift or two 5-hr shifts ONLY. Please specify on application. Shifts are based on festival needs, available shifts, when application arrives, your noted arrival time, and your preference. Please let us know ASAP if your arrival time is changing. ALL volunteers must complete a total of 10 hours.

==>ACCOMMODATIONS: Tent camping ONLY is included in your weekend ticket. Tent campers park offsite at designated lots with shuttles or within walking. Pack easy to shuttle in to campsite. Vehicle Camping is permitted in designated areas and is not included in your ticket (see V. application for more details). Bunks in shared rustic cabins are available- $ for weekend. (Call office ASAP to reserve). Shower houses are nearby. No tents can be put up before 3pm Thursday. No spaces may be saved ahead of time, it’s just not fair.

==>ARRIVAL, CHECK-IN & Goodbye: All volunteers must arrive for check-in before or at your noted arrival time. Upon arrival, 1ST stop at main gate & check-in (during check-in times please) for ticket, work assignments, & parking pass. Please be ON-TIME!. Late arrivals that miss shifts don’t get refunds & deposit is cashed. Volunteers must vacate the festival Sunday 7pm unless scheduled for cleanup shifts.

==>CANCELLATIONS: LEAF relies on dependable volunteers to help smoothly run LEAF. If you cannot volunteer, notify us via email by May 1st or October 1st - we will tear up your deposit check & fill your shifts. After May 1st or October 1st you will be considered a NO-SHOW & your deposit check will be cashed. In extreme emergencies, refunds may be discussed with the Volunteer Director (Please notify us immediately so we know that you will not be arriving). You may NOT exchange volunteer deposit for a ticket at the gate.

==>Calling in sick: Calling in sick after May 1st or October 1st will be considered a NO-SHOW. Again, PLEASE notify us immediately so we know that you will not be arriving. For extreme emergencies please call the office.

==>Weather: The festival must go on regardless of weather, so please dress accordingly. Volunteers must be prepared for all types of weather !

==>Food & Beverage: Snacks and beverages are NOT provided during shifts. PLEASE eat before your shift or bring your own snacks and water.

Volunteer Job Descriptions

During the Festival
  • CHILD CARE
    Location: Elfhaven.
    Job Duties: Work with the childcare staff to provide a safe and friendly environment for the kids. Playing games, coloring and reading stories to the youth are just a few activities you will be required to do.
  • CONCESSIONS
    Location: The Boat House, The Ship or Eden Hall
    Job Duties: You will be selling a variety of drinks to the festival goers including sodas, beer and wine. Special Requirements: Must be detail oriented and good with numbers, handling money and dealing with crowds of people in a pressure situation.
  • FIRST AID
    Location: By Tune Town near Brookside Dance Hall.
    Job Duties: You will be working with the camp doctors to help with lost and found, minor accidents and lost children. Special Requirements: First Aid certification required.
  • FLOATER
    Location: Volunteer Headquarters Tent.
    Job Duties: This is the open slot where you could end up doing just about anything. We have floaters to help incase some one does not show up for a shift or if we need extra help.
    Special Requirements: Flexible and willing to help LEAF with whatever necessary.
  • KITCHEN
    Location: Eden Hall.
    Job Duties: Food preparation and serving food. Special Requirements: Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes, no sandals please. Food service experience helpful. Food safety certification helpful, but not required.
  • PARKING:
    Location: Meet at the Main Gate
    Job Duties: You will be helping with our traffic control and keeping people going in the right direction. Special Requirements: Must be able to give directions to public and stand in all weather conditions. Wear appropriate clothing for the weather conditions and good shoes (no sandals).
  • RECYCLING
    Location: Green Team Tent
    Job Duties: You will be helping with the GREENING of the festival. This includes monitoring the trash and recycling bins, and keeping the grounds clean.
  • SHUTTLE DRIVERS
    Location: Gates.
    Job Duties: Driving shuttles to transport patrons, performers. Special Requirements: Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. Familiarity with the area.
  • WATERFRONT
    Location: Waterfront by Eden Hall.
    Special Requirements: Lifeguard certification required. You will also be working with boats and checking people in for the zip line and gully washer.

Before the Festival

  • BUILD DANCE FLOOR MONDAY BEFORE THE FESTIVAL
    Location: Brookside Dance Hall.
    Special Requirements: Must be able to handle heavy lifting. Bring work gloves if you have them. Wear good shoes, no sandals please. Not for those with back problems.
  • OFFICE ASSISTANCE
    Location: LEAF office, 377 Lake Eden Road, Black Mountain, NC
    Job Duties: Answering phones, customer service, and general office assistance.
    Special Requirements: Good with public.
  • SET-UP MONDAY – THURSDAY BEFORE THE FESTIVAL
    Location: Meet at LEAF office, 377 Lake Eden Road, Black Mountain, NC.
    Special Requirements: Must be able to handle heavy lifting. Bring work gloves if you have them. Wear good shoes, no sandals please. Be sure to check the weather report and dress appropriately. Food is not provided, so be sure to bring your lunch with you. Not for those with back problems.

After the Festival

  • CLEAN-UP POST FESTIVAL MONDAY - THURSDAY
    Location: Meet at LEAF office, 377 Lake Eden Road, Black Mountain, NC.
    Special Requirements: Must be able to handle heavy lifting. Bring work gloves if you have them. Wear good shoes, no sandals please. Be sure to check the weather report and dress appropriately. Food is not provided, so be sure to bring your lunch with you. Not for those with back problems.
  • DANCE FLOOR TEAR-DOWN SUNDAY NIGHT
    Location: Brookside Dance Hall
    Special Requirements: Must be able to handle heavy lifting. Bring work gloves if you have them. Wear good shoes, no sandals please. Not for those with back problems.
